Devils’ Blandisi, Smith-Pelly each fined $2,000 for diving

Watch Joe Blandisi pick up a minor for embellishment after a great soccer dive.

New Jersey Devils forwards Joseph Blandisi and Devante Smith-Pelly were each fined $2,000 on Thursday after a second offence for diving.

Blandisi drew a minor penalty for interference in a game against the New York Rangers on Feb. 23 in a play involving defenceman Dylan McIlrath. Blandisi was subsequently assessed a minor penalty for embellishment. (See the play at the top of this post.)

Blandisi was given a warning just one week prior on Feb. 16 in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Smith-Pelly, who was acquired from the Montreal Canadiens on Monday’s trade deadline, picked up his infractions while still with Montreal.

The Toronto native’s embellishment warning was given after an incident in Minnesota on Dec. 22.

Smith-Pelly’s second diving offence came against the Washington Capitals on Feb. 24 when he drew a minor penalty for slashing against centre Nicklas Backstrom.
