Drew Doughty might have got away with one here. Just a wee bit.
Watch as the Los Angeles Kings defenceman jams his stick straight up on Chicago Blackhawks forward Peter Regin, wedging his blade between the inside of Regin’s visor and his helmet.
Regin skated away with Doughty’s lumber, eventually dislodging the errant stick and throwing it into the corner.
No penalty was called on the play, which play-by-play man Ray Ferraro accurately described as “the highest of high sticks.”
Not that a power play would’ve helped the Blackhawks, who were losing Game 4 by a score of 4-1 at the time and have failed to get their special teams going in the Western Conference final.
“Our special teams all year have been a strength of our team,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville told reporters after the loss, which puts the champs on the brink of elimination. “Our power play, our production’s been off a little bit. I think we’ve got to make sure whether we’re scoring or not, we’ve got to sustain and gather momentum, when the power play’s out there.”
