When Curtis Lazar was selected 17th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2013, Bryan Murray was among the team executives to shake Lazar’s hand on stage at the Prudential Center in New Jersey where the draft was being held.
Lazar suited up in 176 games for the Senators before being acquired by the Calgary Flames in a trade on March 1. Murray died in August at age 74 after a three-year battle with cancer and Lazar was among the hundreds of current and former players the former executive helped mentor.
The 22-year-old will wear a sticker on his helmet honouring Murray Friday night when his current team hosts his former team.
Lazar, who is set to play on the top line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, tweeted a photo of the sticker Friday afternoon.
The sticker shows Murray’s initials and is emblazoned with the words: “Family man, coach and mentor.”
