Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano requires surgery for a torn biceps tendon and is expected to miss the next 4-5 months.
The Flames placed Giordano on injured reserve Sunday after he injured his arm in a 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils last Wednesday.
General manager Brad Treliving told reporters at a post-trade-deadline press conference Monday that the news is “devastating.” Treliving added that there is no possibility of Giordano returning to the lineup should the Flames qualify for the post-season. Treliving added that there’s no replacing a player like the Toronto native.
Through 61 games this season, Giordano had established himself as a leading Norris Trophy contender. His 48 points are tied for the league lead among blueliners alongside Montreal Canadiens star P.K. Subban. Giordano averaged 25:10 in ice-time and had set a career high in points.
On Sunday, the Flames claimed defenceman David Schlemko off waivers.
The Flames currently sit third in the Pacific Division and are battling tooth and nail to remain in a playoff spot. They visit the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday. Fans can watch that game on Sportsnet West with NHL Regional Restrictions applying.
