Calgary Flames forward Sean Monahan was not an alternate captain on Monday but today he is.

The Flames named the 20-year-old an alternate captain Tuesday, the club announced. Monahan (he who has a @boringmonahan Twitter parody account in his honour) and defenceman Dennis Wideman will trade off alternate captain duties for home and road games, while Kris Russell will wear an ‘A’ for all games during the 2015-16 season.

Flames head coach Bob Hartley sung Monahan’s praises following practice Monday.

“He’s not even close to his prime yet and he’s showing unbelievable poise and great maturity,” Hartley said via the club’s official site. “What you guys probably couldn’t see last year was his leadership. He is really growing well in this organization. Last year, towards the end of the year, especially in the playoffs, he was vocal, he was a leader. He was starting to be a leader and that’s so important.

“Leadership isn’t about age. It’s about responsibilities, it’s about who you are, and showing your personality.”

Monahan finished tied with Jiri Hudler for the team lead in goal scoring with 31 last season. The 2013 first-round pick (6th overall) has squashed expectations in his first two seasons, totalling 53 goals and 96 points in 156 games.

Team captain Mark Giordano presented Monahan with his ‘A’ Tuesday morning.
