The Calgary Flames aren’t content with their surprise success in 2014-15, and that has them looking to upgrade with some size this off-season.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman told Boomer and Warrener on Sportsnet 960 The Fan Monday morning that David Backes is the type of player that Flames general manger Brad Treliving could have interest in.
“Depending on what St. Louis decides to do with David Backes, I can see that being the type of player that Calgary might have some interest in,” Friedman said. “I’m not saying they’re going to go out and get David Backes, but he’s the type of player they’re looking at.”

Calgary finished the regular season with a 45-30-7 record, and then beat the Vancouver Canucks in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs before losing to the Anaheim Ducks in Round 2.
The Blues had another solid regular season — finished first in the Pacific division with 109 points. But a first round exit to the Minnesota Wild in the playoffs left questions about their core.
“I just think St. Louis, they’re going to make a change,” Friedman said. “Backes has been quoted as basically saying that we’re not (making changes). I think there’s a couple of things that come down there. No. 1, who’s the player they can get the most for? That’s one question. Backes has a no-move clause. Is he willing to go to any place in particular? Whether it’s Calgary or somewhere else?”
