Curtis Glencross, a nine-year NHL veteran, announced his retirement Tuesday.
The 32-year-old forward played in 507 games for five teams. Glencross broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Anaheim Ducks. He played briefly with the Edmonton Oilers and Columbus Blue Jackets before playing parts of seven seasons for the Calgary Flames. Last season, he joined the Washington Capitals at the trade deadline, playing 18 games and scoring seven points with one point in 10 playoff games.
Glencross joined the Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche on Professional Tryout contracts during this year’s training camp but did not claim a spot on either roster.
In August, Glencross told Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun that he regretted not asking for more on his last contract with the Flames, a four-year, $10.2-million deal.
“I love my time in Calgary and the organization, but you learn that eventually it’s a business and you’re just a number,” he said to Francis. “If I could do it again … when it’s time for you to cash in, you have to take advantage and cash in. You can’t take a pay-cut or hometown discount because things change.”
The Kindersley, Saskatchewan native’s best season came in 2011-12 when he scored 26 goals and 22 assists. He finished his career with 134 goals and 275 points.
