Hitmen fans toss 20,000 teddy bears on the ice

The Calgary Hitmen’s annual Teddy Bear Toss went off without a hitch once again, as fans littered the ice with donations of toys after the home team scored.

If there’s one thing that the Calgary Hitmen love more than winnings it’s … teddy bears?

On Saturday afternoon, the Hitmen hosted their annual teddy bear toss where over 20,000 teddy bears were thrown to the ice as Calgary hosted the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Brick Teddy Bear Toss is an annual event hosted by the Hitmen where fans throw hoards of teddy bears on the ice after the first Calgary player puts a puck in the back of the net. The bears are bagged up and sent out to over 60 agencies including the Salvation Army, Stephen’s Backpacks Society, and Alberta Children’s Hospital.

The Hitmen were down 3-0 to the Hurricanes in the first period before Micheal Zipp managed to push the puck across the line and trigger the plush party.

Saturday marks the 22nd time the Hitmen have hosted the event, and current NHL stars Ryan Getzlaf and Andrew Ladd are among players who have scored the momentous goal.
