Gotta See It: ‘Ugliest goal’ Lundqvist’s ever seen

New York Rangers' Carl Hagelin's shot slips past Boston Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask, who picks a poor time to fall down during the second period in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in the NHL hockey Stanley Cup playoff, Thursday, May 23, 2013, in New York.

You know when you’ve made a mistake?

When the Vezina-champion goaltender whom you’ve defeated in three straight games says you surrendered “probably the ugliest goal I’ve ever seen.”

But New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist — who earned another Vezina nomination this season and is also up for Best Performer in a Losing Role in the Eastern Conference semifinals — will take some Rangers offence any way he can get it.

With the home-team Rangers down 0-3 in the series and two goals in the second period, the Blueshirts needed a break in the worst way. Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask gave them the gift of life.

Watch as Carl Hagelin’s “shot” slips past Rask, who picks a poor time to fall on his rear end.

“I just took a step to the side and what I think there was probably a skate mark or something and my skate dug in it. That’s what it felt like. I lost my balance and the rest is history,” Rask told reporters after the game. “It happens to me twice a year in practice, maybe. . . . Just a tough, tough mistake. It looks pretty bad on TV, I bet.”

Good bet.

Hagelin’s lucky one seemed to give the Rangers new legs, and they stormed back to tie the game and push it to overtime, during which they were able to seal their first W of the series and dodge elimination.
