Dirty.
Joe Grimaldi surely broke the code before squaring off against Nottingham Panthers opponent, Max Parent.
Grimaldi, a 28-year-old New York native who plays for the Elite Ice Hockey League’s Edinburgh Capitals, removed his own helmet and whipped it at Parent from close range before the two fought. (Prior to the helmet-chuck, Grimaldi delivered a check to the head of the Panthers’ Evan Mosey and speared Parent.)
That rule is not just unwritten; it’s unthinkable.
Not only did the Capitals lose Saturday’s game 6-1, but Grimaldi lost the fight, got ejected, picked up 67 penalty minutes and has was released by his own team.
“The Edinburgh Capitals have released Joe Grimaldi from his contract,” the Scottish team announced on its website. “The club wish Joe well on his future career.”
After 17 games with the Capitals this season, Grimaldi leaves with 165 penalty minutes.
