Gotta See It: Sedin’s hardworking empty-netter

Daniel and Henrik Sedin put in a classic performance, propelling the Canucks to a season-opening victory over the Calgary Flames. With Radim Vrbata, it seems they could recapture some of their old magic.

Henrik Sedin is trying to rebound from his worst season in a decade.

And we don’t mean trying in the casual sense. We mean it in the busting-your-dang-ass sense.

Many looked at Sedin’s 11-goal, 50-point season in 2013-14 and saw it as the beginning of the end for one of hockey’s most dynamic duos. Henrik’s ironman streak was squashed, and his fantasy stock plummeted like he was Loui Eriksson or something.

Well, if Wednesday’s opening-night effort is an indication, the twins are back.

Watch above as Henrik, already with an assist on new linemate Radim Vrbata’s game-winner, out-muscles Calgary defencemen Mark Giordano and Kris Russell to score one of the prettiest empty-netter you’ll ever see.

One-handed from a waterslide stance, Henrik swipes his stick on a puck that would’ve otherwise been ruled to be kicked in, then crashes into the vacant cage. Talk about leading by example.

“They got a ton of skill. I feel like I should buy season tickets for the premium seats. They have that knack,” goaltender Ryan Miller told Cassie Campbell-Pascal after his first victory as a Canuck, a 4-2 win over the Calgary Flames. “It’s nice to have them on your side instead of facing them. I’ve had my fair share of tough games against those guys.”
