Gotta See It: Peter Forsberg freaks out as MODO is relegated

Peter Forsberg looks on in horror as his MODO team blows a late third period lead against Leksands. MODO lost in overtime and was relegated.

For the first time in nearly three decades, MODO has been relegated from the Swedish Hockey League after losing a dramatic Game 7 in overtime against Leksands IF on Friday.

MODO was up 3-1 in the third period – they were also up 2-0 and 3-1 at points during the series — when Leksands forward Jon Knuts scored to make it 3-2. With less than one minute remaining in regulation, defenceman Alexander Ytterell tied the game.

Peter Forsberg played parts of eight seasons with MODO throughout his career and is currently an assistant GM with the team. Suffice to say, the Hockey Hall of Famer was apoplectic when the tying goal went it.

Brock Montpetit scored the winning goal for Leksands, which means MODO is relegated to the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s second-tier league. The last time MODO was relegated was during the 1989-90 season.

The MODO hockey club is based out of the small municipality of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. It has produced some of the finest hockey talent of the past 25 years including Forsberg, Markus Naslund, the Sedin twins and Victor Hedman.

While MODO fans are gutted, not every Swedish hockey fan shares the same feeling.

Somewhat ironically, Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg (of no relation to Peter) had the opposite reaction. Filip played three seasons for Leksands prior to beginning his NHL career. This is him reacting to the OT winner.
