Habs’ Emelin dodges hearing after Downie elbow

Montreal's Alexei Emelin followed through on a check after Steve Downie backed up and Emelin received a game misconduct.

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Alexei Emelin will not be getting a call from NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan after delivering a questionable elbow on Philadelphia Flyers forward Steve Downie Thursday night.

Downie, who missed two weeks in November after suffering a concussion, was shaken up after the hit and eventually helped to the locker room by medical staff. He returned for the start of the third period.

Emelin received a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct in the Flyers’ 2-1 victory.
