The family of Gordie Howe is teaming up with ProMedica to launch a human stem cell trial for traumatic brain injuries, as reported by nbc24.com.

The announcement was made Wednesday in Toledo, Ohio where the initiative was launched with Murray Howe, MD, and Joseph Maroon, the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Gordie Howe Initiative will be a three-year effort that focuses on research, treatment and awareness of TBI.

Howe received stem cell treatment on two occasions after suffering a stroke in 2014. After his first treatment, his family remarked that his improvement was “miraculous.”

“Our family is deeply honored to have this initiative named after our father,” said Murray Howe. “My father was a leader on the ice and it is a privilege for him to continue that legacy by supporting this initiative.”

The first trial patients in the Howe Initiative are expected to begin enrollment this summer.
