Hurricanes sign D Jake Bean to entry-level deal

After a stellar season with his hometown Calgary Hitmen, Jake Bean is ready to take on the NHL.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenceman Jake Bean to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Saturday.

Bean was taken with the 13th pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. He led the Western Hockey League in goals by a defenceman with 24 and added 40 assists in 68 games with the Calgary Hitmen.

“It was great having Jake here for our development camp this week, and getting to know him better as a person and player,” said Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis on the club’s website. “He has a bright future in our organization and we are looking forward to seeing him again at the rookie tournament and during training camp.”

The deal pays Bean $832,500 at the NHL level and $70,000 at the AHL level and comes with a $277,500 signing bonus.
