Jacques Demers admitted to hospital after suffering stroke

Watch as the Montreal Canadiens and their fans welcome each and every player in their home opener on Tuesday.

MONTREAL — Former Montreal Canadiens coach Jacques Demers has been admitted to the hospital after suffering a second stroke in the past six months.

Demers, 72, made his first public appearance since suffering a stroke in April just last Tuesday. The former Canadian Senator took part in the home-opening pre-game ceremony at the Bell Centre by carrying the torch out to hand over to Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty.

“I got a bit emotional,” Pacioretty said after Tuesday’s game. “Jacques has always been around and always been so positive and always said the right thing, so it was really hard to hear the news (in April). To see him in the tunnel and to see that he was moved and the reception that he got really meant a lot to me.”

Demers was the last coach to lead the Canadiens to a Stanley Cup win, back in 1993.

There are no further details regarding his health.
