When we last saw Jarome Iginla, he was closing out the 2016-17 regular season with the Los Angeles Kings as they faded from playoff contention. Iginla, who started last season with Colorado, was shipped to the Kings at the trade deadline. In 80 total games last year, Iginla scored 14 goals and 27 points.
Iginla didn’t find a new NHL home as a free agent this season and before January there was some speculation around whether or not he would play for Canada in the Olympics. But rather than playing in Pyeongchang these days, Iginla joined the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence for a skate on Tuesday.
“I’d love to still play,” he told Providence Journal reporter Mark Divver. “This is kind of the first step, getting out here and seeing how it is … I wanted to see if I can still go. I don’t have any deals at this point.”
Divver also noted that Iginla joining Providence for a practice did not necessarily mean the Bruins were interested in bringing him on board.
Iginla, 40, played the 2013-14 season with the Bruins, scoring 30 goals and 61 points in 78 regular-season games, and adding seven points in 12 playoff games.
According to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston, Iginla would need to sign with an NHL team by 3 p.m. next Monday (the NHL trade deadline) to be eligible to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
