Mere days after winning a second Stanley Cup with Los Angeles, John Stevens is being considered for a head coaching position by at least two NHL teams.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes have asked to interview Stevens for their vacant head coaching roles but must gain permission from the Kings, reports Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman.

Stevens, 48, has been part of the Kings’ staff since the 2010-11 season and is currently the assistant coach, winning two Stanley Cups with the team. Prior to joining L.A., he served as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers for four years and assistant coach for one season.

The New Brunswick native was drafted 47th overall in the third round by the Flyers in 1984. He played in 53 games with the Flyers and 183 with the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms. After scoring 20 goals, 166 assists and 186 points as a defenceman, Stevens suffered an eye injury and became an assistant coach to the Phantoms in 1999.

Pittsburgh’s head coaching role has become vacant since Dan Bylsma was fired by the Penguins. Marc Crawford is also expected to interview for the position.
