John Tavares calls out Islanders teammates after bad loss on home ice

Five players scored for the Pittsburgh Penguins who clinched a playoff berth by beating the New York Islanders 5-0.

The New York Islanders put up a stinker Saturday afternoon and captain John Tavares has turned up his nose.

Following a 5-0 blowout at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Tavares called out his team and challenged them to be better.

The Islanders — 4-5-1 in their last 10 — looked flat against the surging Penguins who are now five points clear of New York in the Metropolitan Division.

It wasn’t just Tavares who feels his team has something more to offer with the playoffs approaching.

Tavares finished the contest with two shots on goal and going 50 per cent in the faceoff circle. The Islanders went 0-5 on the power play despite winning 65 per cent of draws as a team.

The Islanders hold the first wild card spot in the East and sit just two points up on Philadelphia, and four up on Detroit.

New York next plays the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday.
