John Tory: Toronto could support two NHL teams

Could a second NHL team work in Toronto?

John Tory doesn’t share NHL commissioner Gary Bettman’s view that a second NHL team in Toronto would be problematic.

In fact, the view of the Toronto mayor is the exact opposite.

“I think Toronto could easily sustain a second franchise,” Tory said Thursday on the Fearless Fred Show on local radio station EDGE 102.1. “I think it would be great for the city.”

Tory says there is enough fan support for a second team and that a local rivalry would help light a fire under the Maple Leafs, who have made just one post-season appearance since the 2003-04 season.

While the idea sounds great in theory, Tory later told The Toronto Sun that he won’t be the one leading a campaign to bring the city another hockey team.

“Am I going to do anything about it? No.” Tory told the Toronto newspaper. “I have many other issues that people expect me to be dealing with.”
