Kings add goaltender Jack Campbell in deal with Stars

Jack Campbell was taken high in the 2010 NHL Draft.

The Los Angeles Kings added goaltending depth to the organization, trading defenceman Nick Ebert to the Dallas Stars in exchange for netminder Jack Campbell.

Campbell, 24, was a big prospect coming into the NHL, as he was selected 11th overall in 2010 by Dallas, but has not performed up to expectations early in his pro career.

The American spent the 2015-16 season between the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads and AHL’s Texas Stars. He registered a less-than-stellar .884 save percentage in 19 AHL games with a 3.65 goals-against average.

Campbell appeared in one career NHL game with Dallas, stopping 41 shots on October of 2013.

Barring a contract extension this week, Campbell will be a restricted free agent on July 1.

The Kings are in need of a backup goaltender as Jhonas Enroth, who spent last season playing behind starter Jonathan Quick, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The Stars still have goaltenders Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi under contract for two more seasons.

Ebert, 22, spent last season with the AHL’s Ontario Reign, the Kings’ AHL affiliate, where he posted two goals with 10 assists in 44 games.
