NEW YORK — Toronto Maple Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur joined the growing list of NHL players hit with suspensions during the pre-season.

The NHL announced Saturday that MacArthur has been suspended for the remainder of the pre-season and two regular-season games for his illegal head shot on Detroit forward Justin Abdelkader.

The incident took place late in the third period Friday in Toronto’s 4-3 overtime road win against the Red Wings. No penalty was assessed on the play.

MacArthur will forfeit US$35,135.14 and is eligible to return to Toronto’s lineup Oct. 15 versus Calgary.

It was the ninth suspension handed out by new NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan during the pre-season.

Those bans total 31 regular-season games and close to $700,000 in lost salary.
