Letang leaves game against Red Wings after awkward collision

Kris Letang would need to take his time getting off the ice after getting twisted up trying to stop a Red Wings’ rush.

Kris Letang left Saturday’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings after suffering an apparent leg injury.

The play in question occurred less than five minutes into the first period when Letang and Red Wings forward Thomas Vanek both made a play for the puck in the slot in front of the Penguins net. Letang’s foot got tied up with Vanek’s and he was spun around awkwardly before sliding into the boards.

He remained down on the ice in obvious pain for several seconds before limping off to the dressing room. He returned to the game a couple of minutes later, played a shift that lasted 17 seconds and then headed back to the dressing room without putting any weight on his left leg.

Luckily for Penguins fans, he was spotted after the game only sporting a slight limp.

Letang only registered 2:06 of ice time.

Prior to the injury, just 27 seconds into the game, he took the puck from the blue line and skated up to the top of the circle before firing a perfect shot right over Jared Coreau‘s blocker arm and into the top corner of the net to open up the game’s scoring.

The 29-year-old missed seven games earlier in the season with a lower-body injury, and he has only played in 29 games this year recording three goals and 19 assists.
