The Anaheim Ducks have added an experienced defenseman to their blueline, while the Tampa Bay Lightning have gained salary cap space and a mid-round draft pick.

On Friday, the Ducks picked up Eric Brewer from the Lighting in exchange for a third round pick in the 2015 NHL draft. Anaheim, who will be without defencemen Francois Beauchemin for the next 4-6 weeks as he recovers from a broken finger and Clayton Stoner, who has the mumps, needed to add another blueliner. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, clears plenty of cap room to use in their push for the Eastern Conference title.

Brewer has played in 982 career NHL games after being drafted fifth overall in the 1997 draft by the New York Islanders. He’s spent time with the Islanders, Oilers, Blues and Lightning. He was also part of the 2002 gold medal-winning Canadian Olympic team, scoring two goals in six games. Brewer has also represented his country in five World Championships, a World Cup and a World Junior Championship.

This season, the Vernon, B.C., native has tallied four assists in 17 games. He is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season.
