Maher on Flames: Ignited by youth

Dressing their youngest lineup in over nine years, the Calgary Flames finally ended the longest losing in franchise history Monday with. 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

None of the four under-23-year-olds scored a goal but one of them, Roman Horak, had two assists as the Flames finally won on the road after 13-straight losses.

The youngsters brought some enthusiasm to the vets who admitted they were embarrassed by their road futility and the fact they were out playoff race especially at such an early date.

While Mike Cammalleri, Alex Tanguay and Roman Cervenka provided the goals it was backup goalie Joey MacDonald earning the first star of the game.

MacDonald made 39 saves to earn his fifth win of the season and second over the Avalanche.

In addition the Horak, the other kids gracing the Flames lineup were Brett Carson, Max Reinhart and Sven Baertschi. All asserted themselves well and figure to stay in the lineup for Wednesday’s home assignment vs. Vancouver.

There could also be another call up from Abbotsford with center Matt Stajan suffering an upper body injury Monday.

The last time the Flames had a lineup that included four players under the age of 23 was Jan. 30, 2004.
