Hanzal suspended 1 game for hit on Brown

Martin Hanzal has been suspended for one game by the National Hockey League.

The Phoenix Coyotes forward was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for boarding Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown in the third period of Game 2 of the Western Conference final on Tuesday.

“I know there are guys behind me, (but) I didn’t think (Hanzal) was going to hit me. He probably saw my numbers from the top of the circle,” Brown said to NHL.com after Game 2. “I mean, he was behind me the whole way. It wasn’t like I turned or anything.”

Here is NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan’s explanation of the ruling:

The Coyotes are down 2-0 in the best-of-seven series to the Kings and Game 3 takes place in Los Angeles on Thursday night.
