Gotta See It: Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick’s HBO special

Hard to believe its been a decade since Joe Thornton wore the Bruins black and gold. On the 10 year anniversary we take a look at "Jumbo Joe" now and then.

Much deserving of an HBO spotlight, hockey broadcaster extraordinaire Mike “Doc” Emrick was the subject of this excellent Real Sports feature.

The 14-minute profile traces the 69-year-old voice of the NHL on NBC from his humble beginnings in the booth to calling Stanley Cup finals and Olympic gold medal games.

“I guess I wanted a fun job, and this has always been a fun job for me,” Emrick tells the network. “If you want something bad enough, you just go after it.”

Though Emrick is arguably the greatest wordsmith to call the game, perhaps this profile’s best quote comes from a colleague of his, Al Michaels.

“You name it, Doc could do it,” says Michaels. “If you had a cockroach race in your basement, he’d bring it to life for you.”
