The New Jersey Devils signed veteran forward Jordin Tootoo to a new contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Tootoo attended Devils training camp on a professional tryout offer.

The team did not release the terms of the deal, but according to Devils’s beat writer Tom Gulitti, it is a one-year, one-way contract.

Tootoo had spent the last two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Last season he registered one assist in 11 games with the Red Wings and also spent 51 games with the Red Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

Prior to his time in Detroit, the 31-year-old played eight seasons with the Nashville Predators after they selected him in the fourth round of the 2001 NHL Draft.

In 539 career regular-season games, Tootoo has 49 goals, 85 assists and 808 penalty minutes.

Tootoo was one of several veterans invited to Devils camp this off-season. The team also invited Scott Gomez, Tomas Kaberle, Ruslan Fedotenko and Mike Komisarek. Gomez will continue to practice with the team, but has not been signed; Kaberle, Fedotenko and Komisarek were released.

The Devils are the only team in the NHL with an average age of older than 30.
