TORONTO – The Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the NHL’s most valuable franchises, now have their own money.
A commemorative Maple Leafs loonie, created in recognition of the historic hockey club’s centennial season, was unveiled Saturday at Air Canada Centre by Leafs legend Wendel Clark and Royal Canadian Mint president and CEO Sandra Hanington.
Designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati, the golden dollar features a pair of hockey sticks facing off above the Leafs’ current logo. The blade to the left is a vintage wood stick, a nod to the team’s storied past; the modern stick on the right is a tip to current game.
The years “1917” and “2017” flank the Maple Leafs emblem, and a ring of 100 dots borders the coin—one for each year of the Leafs’ existence.
“Leafs fans across the country can now look forward to finding one of these special coins in their change and collecting it as a piece of Canada’s glorious hockey history,” said Hanington in a release.
Leafs president Brendan Shanahan said the Leafs are “honoured” the Royal Canadian Mint recognized the club’s 100th anniversary in this way.
Five million Maple Leafs loonies have begun to circulate. Fans can order a roll of 25 for $54.95 from the Canadian Mint’s website.
