Rangers assign Biron, Asham to Hartford in AHL

Goaltender Martin Biron announced his retirement at the age of 36 on Sunday, after playing parts of 16 NHL seasons.

The New York Rangers assigned backup goalie Martin Biron and forward Arron Asham to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League after the two veterans cleared waivers Tuesday.

Biron has made just eight total appearances for the Rangers over the last two seasons. In two appearances this season, the Lac-Saint-Charles, Que., native is 0-1-0 with a 7.61 goals against average and a .763 save percentage.

The 36-year-old said he’s unsure what this transaction means for his hockey future.

“It’s not the best-case scenario, obviously, but I’m going to be all right and I’m going to figure it all out,” Biron told ESPN’s Katie Strang. “Obviously, I have to take some time to think about it. We’ll see. I’ll talk to the family and get some advice from many different people.”

Cameron Talbot is expected to take over for Biron as the team’s second-string goalie. The Rangers’ backup netminder typically doesn’t get much playing time, though, since Henrik Lundqvist plays the bulk of the games.

Meanwhile, Asham was minus-3 with 14 penalty minutes in three games played this season. The 35-year-old had two goals and 50 penalty minutes in 27 games last season.

The Rangers have struggled early in the season, posting a 1-4 record and being outscored 25-9. The team visits the Washington Capitals Wednesday before hosting the New Jersey Devils Saturday.
