NHL, union to meet Monday in NYC

The NHL and the NHL Players’ Association will be back negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement as they are tentatively scheduled to meet in New York City on Monday.

Sportsnet’s Daren Millard first reported the meeting Saturday afternoon.

It was believed the two sides would be taking a break after reports surfaced that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman suggested a two-week moratorium on CBA talks.

But deputy commissioner Bill Daly told Millard that negotiations are now back on.

The NHL lockout has lasted 63 days with 327 regular-season games already lost and the league has already cancelled the Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings scheduled for New Year’s Day.

A shortened season is still a possibility as the 1995 lockout ended in January and resulted in a 48-game schedule. The previous lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 season was cancelled in February.
