The National Hockey League and the NHL Officials Association have agreed on a new four-year contract.

The deal still needs to be ratified, but the league has asked for up to a week to prepare the final documentation before it is presented to the members of the NHLOA.

Talks between the two sides were said to be very close and productive late last week, but over the weekend, things took a turn for the worst.

Earlier it was reported that the league was prepared to start the season using scab officials if a new agreement was not reached. There has also been talk of the NHL dropping one linesman from the rotation for games, using just two referees and one linesman with the junior referee assisting the linesman in breaking up fights.
