NHL salary cap could reach $74.5 million for 2016-17

George Stroumboulopoulos at the NHL Board of Governors meetings with Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman discussing the issues plaguing the expansion process, and a couple of likely rule changes going forward.

The NHL’s salary cap could increase as much as $3.1 million for the 2016-17 season according to range provided at the Board of Governors meeting in Pebble Beach, California.

The maximum the league could see the cap rise to for next season is $74.5 million. The cap is at $71.4 million this season, which is up from $69 million in 2014-15.

As Sportsnet analyst Elliotte Friedman noted on Twitter, if the cap hits $74.5 million then the floor would be $55.1 million, a $4.1 million uptick from this season.

Cap projections are purely speculative at this point, as a number of factors, including the value of the Canadian dollar, will go into to determining where it lands ahead of next season.
