Why Nick Kypreos appearing on Steve Dangle podcast is a big deal

So Nick Kypreos is coming on the podcast Tuesday!

The reason most podcast listeners are excited for Kypreos’ appearance on the show, of course, stems from that time he called me a “loser” on live television.

The rant Kyper is referring to was during one of my videos during the Leafs’ soul-destroying collapse during the 2014-15 season. During one particular LFR, which are my Leafs post-game videos, I talked about how great I thought tanking was.

Sportsnet producer and world’s tallest man Paul Bromby asked if he could use it on TV the next evening and obviously I said yes. I didn’t get to see it air on Sportsnet however because I was busy making another video.

So, the clip from my video aired, Kypreos didn’t seem pleased, but again, I didn’t even see it. My Twitter mentions however immediately shot up and people said they saw me. That was cool, but I just kept on editing my video.

A few minutes later, I received hundreds of mentions at once.

It turns out they aired a clip of me again, only this time, Kypreos said I sounded like a loser.

I’m not gonna lie: I actually panicked a little bit.

I was barely halfway through my first season working at Sportsnet and I thought I had a made an enemy in one of the biggest personalities they have. Paul Bromby also emailed me to say, “I didn’t know he was going to say that!”

He didn’t want me to think he asked to use one of my videos just so I could get trashed on TV.

To make matters worse, I was about to upload this:

The video wasn’t even in response to Kypreos! It was a complete coincidence. Oh man…

A little less than two months later, Sophia Jurksztowicz and Amanda Da Ponte asked me to help them research and write hits throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sophia, now a host on Sportsnet, was a classmate of mine for four years at Ryerson while I also knew Amanda from my time at Leafs TV. It’s a small business.

This was an incredible opportunity for me! I’d be sitting in with all the hosts while they watched the games and planned segments and – wait. Is Nick Kypreos gonna be there?

Crap.

I made a point to introduce myself to him.

“Hi uh… Nick?” He turned around and looked at me kind of confused.

“I’m, uh, Steve Dangle.”

“OH!” To my surprise, he lit right up. Beats a punch in the teeth, right?

He was super welcoming. We’ll get more into it on the podcast, I’m sure. Our meeting also lead to this picture:

I sent this picture to my wife. All she said was “Never wear a T-Shirt over a long sleeve shirt again”, which I haven’t.

I’m really looking forward to this show and I hope you are, too. Have any questions? Just let me know!

My Twitter handle is @Steve_Dangle.

Get to it, losers!
