Mayors bet smoked meat, BeaverTails on series

They were the story of the second half as the NHL watched in awe and wonder as the Ottawa Senators mounted a massive comeback from 14 points back to a playoff berth.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are upon us, which can only mean one thing: Mayors betting snacks.

After his hometown club rallied to qualify for the post-season, Ottawa mayor Jim Watson rang up Montreal mayor Denis Coderre, and the two men struck a friendly wager on their cities’ first-round series that will be both mildly embarrassing and marvelously delicious no matter the outcome.

If the wild-card Ottawa Senators defeat the Atlantic champion Montreal Canadiens, Coderre must send Watson some of Montreal’s finest smoked meat. If the Habs win, Watson must send Coderre some BeaverTails — the pastry of choice for all Rideau Canal skaters.

The losing mayor must also fly the winning team’s flag at city hall for a week and wear the winning team’s sweater to a city council meeting.
