Senators owner Melnyk released from hospital

Eugene Melnyk’s 'miracle worker' team of doctors discuss the extraordinary live-donor procedure that saved the Senators owner’s life.

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk was released from Toronto General Hospital earlier this week after undergoing a successful liver transplant, the team announced Wednesday.

“Mr. Melnyk’s recovery has been proceeding very well since undergoing his transplant,” Dr. Atul Humar, the Medical Director of the University Health Network’s Multi-Organ Transplant Program, said in a press release. “As with all of our transplant patients, Mr. Melnyk has been monitored closely by his transplant team and his general health has improved to the point where he can begin the next phase of his recovery. In addition, we are pleased to report that the anonymous donor has also been discharged and is doing extremely well.”

Melnyk was transferred to a facility that provides him with daily rehabilitation services. The 56-year-old requires weekly follow-up examinations with his transplant team as part of his post-transplant recovery.

In mid-May, the Senators issued a public appeal for someone to donate part of their liver to Melnyk because he urgently needed a transplant. There were 500 people who volunteered and 12 candidates were screened before a donor was found. The surgery took place on May 19.
