Ovechkin’s 499th goal gets Super Mario treatment

10 years ago Alex Ovechkin broke into the NHL, he is now at 500 goals and he is arguably the greatest goal scorer we have seen since Brett Hull.

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has been destined for elite company since his debut in the NHL.

Armed with a more than his fair share of highlight-reel goals, he cemented himself among the immortals of the sport on Sunday night when he become the 43rd player to reach 500 career goals.

In classic Ovechkin style, he made the road to 500 a fun one, scoring No. 499 on yet another brilliant end-to-end effort for an OT winner.

Video editor Paul Holub had a little fun with the fantastic moment by adding some Super Mario Bros. “power-up” effects to the video.

The Bowser-conquering plumber isn’t the only Super Mario that Ovechkin has in his sights. He’s only 189 goals behind Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux, who sits 10th all-time in NHL goal scoring.
