Sportsnet has learned that the Florida Panthers are not expected to name a new general manager this season. The day-to-day hockey operations will continue to be handled by assistant general manager Randy Sexton.

The GM position has been vacant since Jacques Martin departed in June to become head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. Sexton was part of the group that helped Ottawa get an NHL franchise, and he was also the Senators second GM.

t is believed that former Panthers head coach Doug MacLean, Doug Risebrough and Neil Smith were all in the running for the vacant GM position. As for executive Bill Torrey, it is unclear if he will remain with the club or what his future duties will be.
