Red Wings assign Andreas Athanasiou to AHL Grand Rapids

Watch as Andreas Athanasiou scores his first playoff goal, putting the Red Wings up 1-0 against the Lightning.

The Detroit Red Wings have sent one of their best young players to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Andreas Athanasiou, drafted 110th overall in 2012, has been assigned to the Griffins ahead of their Central Division Final matchup with the Lake Erie Monsters.

Athanasiou received his first taste of NHL action this season, playing in 37 contests and scoring nine goals and five assists, while playing less than nine minutes a game. He added one goal in five playoff games as the Red Wings were eliminated in Round 1 by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

He’ll join fellow prospect Anthony Mantha in Grand Rapids, who completed their opening-round sweep of the Milwaukee Admirals Tuesday.
