Red Wings place Jakub Kindl on waivers

It didn't seem as if the Maple Leafs were prepared when Jakub Kindl rushed up ice, waltzed past three players in blue and scored a high short-side goal to give the Red Wings the win in overtime.

After being a healthy scratch for four straight games, Jakub Kindl was placed on waivers by the Detroit Red Wings Saturday.

The Czech defenceman has until Sunday at noon to clear, at which point he will be assigned to Detroit’s AHL affiliate, Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Red Wings are attempting to clear cap space in preparation for the imminent return of blue-liner Kyle Quincey. Quincey was sidelined with an ankle injury that required surgery in mid-November.

Kindl has one full season remaining on his four-year deal he signed in 2013-14, and carries a cap hit of $2.4 million.

Kindl, 28, has two goals and three assists in 23 games this season.

He has been with the organization since being drafted in the first round (19th overall) by the Red Wings in 2005, registering 16 goals and 51 assists in 271 career NHL games.
