The Detroit Red Wings have bolstered their forward depth, acquiring Matt Puempel from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenceman Ryan Sproul, the team announced Saturday.

Puempel suited up for 27 games in a Rangers uniform last season, posting six goals and nine points in that span. He’s amassed a total of 10 goals and 15 points through 79 career NHL tilts, the bulk of which came previously for the Ottawa Senators organization. The 24-year-old has skated in five games for the Rangers’ AHL affiliate in Hartford this season, posting three points thus far.

Sproul also skated in 27 NHL games last season, posting seven points for the Red Wings in 2016-17. The Mississauga, Ont. native spent the previous three seasons with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
