The Colorado Avalanche are “very likely” to host an outdoor game next season at Coors Field, according to a Thursday report from The Denver Post.
The game wouldn’t serve as the Winter Classic, but instead would be a part of the NHL’s Stadium Series that launched last season with four games–two in New York, one in Los Angeles and one in Chicago.
No date for this potential event has been determined.

It’s no secret the Avalanche have coveted an outdoor game ever since the NHL began holding them on a regular basis back in 2008. In October, Avalanche president Josh Kroenke said the team was “pushing the league quite hard” to hold a game outside.
Coors Field is home to MLB’s Colorado Rockies and has capacity of 50,445 for baseball games. Back in February, Rockies owner Dick Monfort tweeted out the following from the team’s official account: “We have been in discussions with the NHL and the Avalanche and hopefully we will have an outdoor hockey game at Coors Field.”
