Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is set to have arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist within the next few days, according to Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The surgery is to repair damage that “impeded his performance in the post-season,” according to a source cited by Molinari. The source also said that the captain “did play with a terrible wrist” during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Another source close to Crosby said the procedure “is not major, but you can’t play the same way” with the kind of injury the centre had.

After winning the regular-season scoring race with 104 points, Crosby put up one goal and eight assists in 13 playoffs games as the Penguins bowed out to the New York Rangers in the second round.

Crosby denied throughout the playoffs that he was playing injured.

Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford has also commented on Crosby’s status, saying the team will make a decision on whether the Pittsburgh star will undergo surgery or not by next week.
