Rogers on Flames: Another failed Flames season

Now that Miikka Kiprusoff has retired, the Calgary Flames' goaltending situation has become cloudy.

Tonight the Flames play their final game of the year. What can you say about the 2012-2013 season?

You can describe it in one word, “FAILURE”.

There was a lot of promised hope by the Flames management when this season started. The signings of Wideman, Hudler, Cerevenka, the coming of Sven Baetschi as the next star of this team and the revamped coaching staff were to get the Flames over the hump.

G.M. Jay Feaster stated on our pre-game show before the season that this would be one of “no excuses”. Mangement did not make excuses, because there wasn’t any to make. You can’t blame the dismal season on injuries, because for the most part, this was a healthy team.

There is no such thing as bad breaks or bad bounces, so that one doesn’t work. What the biggest problem was, again, that the front office, and that includes the President and ownership, over evaluated the talent of this team.

For the fourth straight year, this group had in their heads that this was a team better than it is. How many times can you do this? I guess four, because this is the fourth straight year the Flames are out of the playoffs. The one saving grace this year is that the powers that be have finally realized they are not going to win with the group they have, so changes were made and now the future looks a little brighter.

No one knows how long it will take the Flames to get back to the postseason, but at least they are going in the right direction.
