Frederik Andersen appears to have turned a corner this season and Don Cherry is taking notice.
The Maple Leafs goaltender entered Saturday having won three straight games while stopping 110 of 114 shots. He’s earning the respect of the league, says the venerable broadcaster.
“This guy does not get the credit he deserves,” Cherry said of Andersen on Saturday during the Coach’s Corner segment of Hockey Night In Canada.
Andersen, in his second year with the Leafs, stopped 42 shots on Thursday against the New Jersey Devils in a 1-0 shutout win that was arguably his best performance of the season.
He entered Saturday leading all goalies in the NHL with 569 shots against.
“Nobody in the history of hockey ever gets cold turkey shots like he gets against him,” Cherry said. “This guy is the reason [the Leafs are competitive]. He steals game after game after game.
“He is the only reason they are winning.”
