A few hours before the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs began, the world learned that Dayna Brons died from injuries sustained in Friday’s bus crash near Tisdale, Sask.
Don Cherry honoured the 25-year-old Brons, who worked as a trainer for the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, during his Coach’s Corner segment on Wednesday night.
“She was a trainer for the lacrosse team, the soccer team, the baseball team. She just wanted to help everybody,” Cherry said. “God love her.”
Brons’s death brings the total number of dead to 16. The Broncos were on their way to a playoff game when the team bus collided with a semi truck at an intersection.
Cherry also called attention to Broncos bus driver Glen Doerksen, who died at the age of 59.
“Let me tell you about the drivers,” said Cherry. “The drivers are always like the father confessors. When you’re having a tough time you can always come up and talk to them.
“I couldn’t sleep on the bus and it was 4:30 in the morning and you’d see the bus driver there. Like Glen. … You wonder how the heck they ever do it.”
