The Buffalo Sabres have acquired centre Ryan O’Reilly and winger Jamie McGinn from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenceman Nikita Zadorov, forward Mikhail Grigorenko, prospect J.T. Compher and the 31st pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

O’Reilly is entering the final year of his contract before becoming a UFA in 2016. His current salary cap hit is $6 million. In 82 games this past season, the 2014 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy winner had 17 goals and 38 assists.

This move comes one day after the Avalanche acquired the rights to Carl Soderberg of the Boston Bruins Thursday afternoon. Soderberg is a quality two-way centre like O’Reilly.

Zadorov, who was the 16th-overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, had 15 points in 60 games last season, while Grigorenko, the 12th-overall pick in 2012, had six points in 25 games with the Sabres last season. Compher was the 35th pick in the 2013 draft and was recently named captain at the University of Michigan where he was named Big 10 Rookie of the Year in 2013-14.

McGinn has been with the Avalanche since the 2011-12 season.
