Sabres sign forward Girgensons to 1-year contract

Zemgus Girgensons scored on a breakaway with 2:31 left in overtime to lift the Buffalo Sabres to victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Zemgus Girgensons to a one-year, $1.15-million contract, the club announced Thursday.

Girgensons, a native of Riga, Latvia, scored seven goals and totalled 18 points in 71 games with the Sabres in 2015-16.

“Zemgus has grown into a solid two-way player since beginning his career,” said Sabres General Manager Tim Murray. “We hope to see him continue this positive trend and find a consistent role within the club this season as another young player to grow with our group.”

The 22-year-old was voted an NHL All-Star in 2014-15 following a fervent ballot-box stuffing effort from Latvian hockey fans.

The Sabres originally selected Girgensons 14th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft.

Girgensons has registered 30 goals and 70 points in 202 career games.
