Scary skate cut incident in KHL game

There was a terrifying incident during a KHL game between Yugra and Slovan on Sunday.

Yugra forward Vitaly Sitnikov’s neck was accidentally cut by the skate of Slovan forward and former NHL player Ladislav Nagy.

WARNING: The following video contains graphic footage.

Luckily all of Sitnikov’s major neck veins and arteries were avoided in the incident.

The neck contains the carotid arteries which take blood up to the brain, as well as the jugular veins which take blood away from the brain. Richard Zednik’s injury from his infamous incident was to his carotid artery, while Clint Malarchuk suffered injuries to his carotid and jugular.

There was another neck injury in hockey this past weekend, this time in the NHL.

Buffalo Sabres defender Carlo Colaiacovo was cross-checked in the throat by Nashville Predators forward Viktor Arvidsson. Colaiacovo suffered a dented trachea on the play while Arvidsson received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct.

It might be time to make neck guards mandatory.
