Semin clears waivers, may seek KHL deal

Monday's 3 game slate was anything but quiet as Vancouver was powered by a Vrbata hat trick, Colorado by some overtime heroics and the Predators by a late 3rd period goal.

Montreal Canadiens forward Alexander Semin could be on the verge of going back to his native Russia, according to a blog post by TVA’s Renaud Lavoie.

Semin was put on waivers Dec. 7 after being a frequent healthy scratch for the club and went unclaimed by all other NHL teams.

According to Lavoie, Semin will be sent to the St. John’s IceCaps of the AHL. Lavoie adds his agent is looking for a team in Europe to offer a contract, ideally from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

In 15 games with the Canadiens this season, Semin has just one goal and three assists.

Semin became a free agent this off-season after posting just six goals and 13 assists (both career lows) in 57 games, then being bought out by the Carolina Hurricanes, just two years after signing a five-year $35-million extension.

He signed a one-year $1.1 million contract with Montreal on July 24.
